Katie (12) with her sister, Jenna

Katie’s Family Background
Born Katherine Evelyn Anita Cassidy in Los Angeles, California on November 25, 1986, Katie is the daughter of actor and singer David Cassidy, and former model, Sherry Williams. It is safe to say that she has perfoming running in her blood as on her father’s side, Katie is the granddaughter of actors Jack Cassidy and Evelyn Ward and the niece of producer Shaun Cassidy and actor Patrick Cassidy.

Katie was primarily raised by her mother Sherry and her step-father Richard Benedon in California. She wanted to pursue a career in performing at a very young age, but her mother insisted that she should continue her studies before taking a direction towards singing or acting. It wasn’t until her early teens that she established a relationship with her biological father but was close to her paternal grandmother, Evelyn Ward, whom she sees as a true inspiration. On her step-father’s side, Katie has two older sisters, Jenna and Jamie with whom she is very close with, and has one half-brother on David’s side, Beau Cassidy.

I was in theater when I was in elementary, middle school and high school. I didn’t know it would be an actual profession for me. I didn’t think of it as a reality. If I were going to do it, I wanted to make sure to do it on my own merit. My father… I understand we have the same last name, but I didn’t grow up with him. I wanted to make a name for myself. I ended up meeting my manager because my sister was a receptionist at a management company. My manager is actually my same manager that I have today. That’s how it started. I worked my way.

From Katie’s Yearbook

The Beginning of a Career
At a young age, Katie has already shown a passion for acting. She participated in several theatre productions from the age of 7, and as a teenager she started to study with an acting coach. Katie was also interested in gymnastics.
In elementary schoool she was already very passionate about acting. She participated in several theatre productions from the age of 7 and as a teenager she started to study with an acting coach.

“I was a freshman and auditioned for the school play. Freshmen usually never got cast. I was the first freshman to be actually given a legitimate part and it was that feeling of ‘Wow! I broke the system!’”

She was also interested in gymnastics, which lead to her eventually becoming a cheerleader for the California Flyers, a competetive team. Additionally she also did some modelling, which lead her to get a campaign for Abercombie and Fitch in 2004. And while she wanted to pursue her dream to go and pursue her dream as an actress, her mother wouldn’t let her do that, before she finished her high school education. Katie attended the Calabasas High School, where she continued her cheerleading carrees, and she graduated with honors in 2005.

After graduation she planned to go to New York to the famous Tisch School of Performing Arts, but a few acting jobs came along her way. She made her television debut in 2003 on a TV show called Division, where she played a girl who got raped by her mother’s boyfriend. She continued her modeling career for a while, and she made a few other TV appearances, her biggest role at that time was a recurring role on 7th Heaven.

On the set of Monte Carlo with Leighton and Selena

In 2005 she quit modelling, and decided to concentrate on acting only. After a smaller role in Click as Adam Sandler’s daughter, she got her first main role on the horror remake Black Christmas, working alongside Michelle Trachtenberg. Then three minor roles in independent movies followed, Walk the Talk, Live! and You Are Here in 2006.

A TV Star is Born

She eventually found her way back to television. Her breakthrough performance was in 2007 on The CW TV show Supernatural, where she played the sassy demon, Ruby, a fan favorite. When she was cast for this role, it was supposed to be a recurring role, but because of the writer’s strike that happened around that time, the season was cut short, and so were the number of her episodes. Because of the uncertainity that came with the role, when she was given a chance to leave the show she did, that was when Harper’s Island came along. It was a one season contract with the CBS, which is basically a sister-network for The CW. Although the show did not bring the success people expected, Katie was very happy with her role and her choice to go with that show instead.

With Leighton Meester in Gossip Girl

The next milestone came in 2009, where she got cast as Ella Simms, a sarcastic and ambitious publicist on the new Melrose Place reboot. Katie got her very first main role on a television show, and was praised for her dynamic acting and incredible screen presence by critics. Sadly the show did not bring the best numbers ratings concerned, so it was not renewed for a second season. Over hiatus Katie travelled Europe for a coming of age movie called Monte Carlo, starring Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester and Cory Monteith, and by the time summer was over, it was already announced that in the fall she will appear on the fourth season of Gossip Girl, in a role that was written especially for her, having an 11 episode long arc.

In early 2012, The CW started developing a comic book based TV show based off the Green Arrow stories by DC Comics, and Katie fell in love with the character of Laurel Lance, based on the pilot script and the possibility that she may eventually become a superhero called the Black Canary, because she wanted to do an actionpacked role for a while.

It was everything that I wanted to get involved with, so I was beyond thrilled. I love women. Now, especially, more than ever, we’re seen as equals to men and can do the same things. By the way, we do also bring life to this planet, which is enough, in itself. But, to be taken seriously, as a professional, I’m so about that, especially with a character like this. Laurel, in the corporate world and as a lawyer, is so good at what she does. She makes stuff happen, in the business world. At some point, if and when the Black Canary happens, it’s just awesome for a woman to get to kick some ass and fight, and just be as tough and bad-ass as Green Arrow, or whoever.

After she was done filming the pilot for Arrow, she did another indie film called Kill for Me with Tracy Spiridakos, and then went back to shooting the series.

The show was incredibly popular among viewers and critics as well, and by the end of season 2, Katie got very close to putting the black leather costume of the Black Canary on and in season three she finally got to suit up. However the lead female role was not an immediate path to popularity, as Katie was and still is frequently bullied online by people who are supposedly fans of the show. Thankfully she does not let the hate get to her, and concentrates on acting and her newly founded fashion blog, TomboyKC, which serves as another creative outlet for her.

Her Public Romantic Relationships
Katie was never too open about her personal life, she likes to keep the focus of the media on her carreer, but there have been a few romantic relationships she talked about openly. (Note: The relationships that she did not talk about publicly are left out, not only to respect her privacy, but also because those count merely as rumors.)

Katie with Jarett Stoll

Katie with Jesse McCartney & Dana Brunetti

Her earliest celebrity love interest was Jesse McCartney back in 2005. They dated for about two years, and during that time he wrote several songs about her, and reportedly never stopped looking at their relationship for inspiration, not even after it ended in 2007. Katie inspired Jesse to write songs like, “She’s No You” (Katie also appeared in the music video for this song), “Tell Her” and “Bleeding Love” (performed by Leona Lewis).

Her next reported relationship was with NBA star Sasha Vujačić, and we know little about that, the two ended things around the time Katie was still shooting Melrose Place in 2009. The writers of the show even made a comment dissing Sasha in a joke, as a way to refer to him treating Katie poorly, who around that time was the main star of Melrose, playing Ella Simms. Katie later in 2009 started dating Jarett Stoll, NHL hockey player, who travelled Europe with her when she was shooting Monte Carlo and Gossip Girl in 2010. His other celebrity boyfriends include Entourage star Jerry Ferrara, and hockey player, Jason Garrison. She is currently dating Hollywood producer Dana Brunetti.
